Europan Housing Competition, Leisnig, Germany, 2008

In collaboration with Troy Schaum

Although this proposal is motivated by a housing competition, Urban Punc. proposes no housing! Instead we ask: in a town that has a surplus of housing, how can we make use of what we have and encourage the population to return from the suburbs? Especially with an aging population, issues of accessibility, collective programming, and adjacent parking are key.

Apostrophes are the infrastructural support that a cluster of existing houses needs to survive. Each Apostrophe will allow 70% (compared to 15% currently) of the houses to be accessed for the elderly or physically challenged. They provide parking-, garden- and collective space to ensure that social and physical needs for all ages are provided for. Apostrophes are inserted into existing fissures in the block.
